Born in Woking, Surrey, England in 1960 – It was inevitable that Donna became an artist, with her father being the established painter, author and broadcaster Alwyn Crawshaw.
The foundation of learning for her art came from her father who encouraged her from a very early age and later at school where she excelled in art related subjects and sold her first painting to a teacher.
Later she studied at the West Surrey College of Art & Design at Farnham but left after her foundation year to concentrate on her paintings which were already in great demand.
So, at the age of only seventeen, Donna became a professional artist and her paintings were soon snapped up by galleries as well as private and corporate buyers. Her talent and potential was recognised and soon her distinctive paintings of animals and rural scenes became well known.
Donna’s choice of media includes acrylics, watercolours and pastels but her work is also available as collectors prints, greetings cards and on Royal Worcester porcelain.
Her pictures often tell a story, indicating her attention to detail as well as her love for her subject. With a keen interest in the countryside and its inhabitants as well as a sound knowledge of the anatomy of animals Donna paints with accuracy and sympathy to her subjects. Whether it be a Shetland pony or a Shire, a terrier or a black Labrador or even trout lazing under river weed Donna studies her subject carefully.
She has gained an enviable reputation as a leader in the field of animal paintings and has won a number of prizes and awards for her work.
The artist now lives and works in a beautifully situated farmhouse on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons in Wales looking onto the Carmarthen Fans and the Black Mountain. This choice of location was no accident as it gives Donna easy access to her chosen subjects and she is often found down country lanes sketching old farm buildings, sheep, cattle and even wildlife, returning home to her studio to complete the paintings.
Donna exhibits regularly at numerous leading galleries and exhibitions and is a valued member of the Society of Equestrian Artists and the Society of Women Artists.
Much of Donna's working year is occupied with client request commissions of varying subject matter such as valued pets, prize winning farm or breeding stock and favoured locations.
Previous subject matter has included race horses, stud cobs, prized cattle, dogs, cats, farms, fish, birds of prey and still life.
Usually working from life Donna can also work from good photographs and will advise and discuss each commmision in depth with the client including the desired medium, print edition or other ideas.
